Description
This statue commemorates Florence Martus.
Between 1887 and 1931 she greeted every ship sailing into Savannah.
By day she waved a handkerchief, by night a lantern.
Assisting her on the night watch were two dogs who knew when to wake her
Legend has it she fell in love with a sailor.
He sailed away.
She took up a vigil hoping to be the first to welcome him back.
He never returned.
The statue was sculpted by Felix de Weldon
His most famous work is the Marine Corps War Memorial which depicts the raising of the flag over Iwo Jima
