Description
The Ajanta caves are fantastic examples of Buddhist religious art.
The creators first cut slits into the cliff face.
Then chiseled their way into the basalt.
It is believed nothing was carved outside of a cave and brought in to be assembled.
Rather the stupa, the bas reliefs and the pillars were all sculpted from rock that stood where they stand now.
It's a stunning feat.
The earliest cave dates to the 2nd century BC.
Since then Ajanta has been a place of Buddhist teaching and pilgrimage.
It is now a UNESCO world heritage site
