Description
The Eastern White Pine:
The Iroquois called it the tree of peace.
But then the British arrived and it became the "mast" pine.
It was perfect for making spars because it grew straight and tall.
That also made it the first choice of pioneers and their descendants.
Once this pine covered all of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States.
Generations of extensive logging have left only one per cent of that old growth forest.
The tree was celebrated in paintings by the Group of Seven.
This was a band of Canadian landscape painters in the 1920s.
And so it became the official tree of Ontario Canada.
It is also the state tree of Maine and Michigan.
