Description
The old part of Belfast was known as Sailortown.
It was a working class community with giant linen mills, warehouses and the dockyards.
(The Titanic was built nearby)
As the area prospered new streets were added.
Trafalgar was one of them.
At one point in the 1800's it had 63 homes.
Sailortown boomed but then waned.
Depression.
War.
The march of time.
In the 1960's it was decided to demolish most of the area for a freeway
All that's left of Trafalgar Street is a short lane between two buildings
That's where I found this street sign
There's an old expression about keeping something together with spit and baling wire.
The memory of Sailortown is being kept alive with chalk and the letter 'R'
