Description
A Mute Swan greets the sunrise on the Avon River in Stratford Ontario, home of the renowned Shakespearean Festival Theatre
The first swans were gifted in 1918
Since then other bloodlines were introduced including some from the royal herd
The swans can't carry on when the river freezes
So they over winter indoors tended to by the city and volunteers
Then in April they are paraded back to the river as part of the Swan Festival Weekend
"For all the water in the ocean
Can never turn the swan's black legs to white,
Although she lave them hourly in the flood."
(Titus Andronicus 4.2.103-5)
