Description
Dry animal dung is used as a fuel by two billion people
In Rajasthan India it is called upla.
And cows are the chief source.
280 million of them roam the country producing 700 million tons of dung daily.
It is typically mixed with dried plant material.
That keeps it burning longer like charcoal.
In Rajasthan they use a shrub called phog.
Once the upla is burning they add firewood
They use an acacia called keekar, a eucalyptus called safeda or the roots of the phog itself
This woman gathers these essential materials daily
In the bottom of the bowl is upla
On top of that is keekar
And under her arm is the phog
It's what keeps the home fires burning
