Description
Dame's Rocket (Hesperis Matronalis) is an old-fashioned ornamental
Its scent is heightened in the evening
And that's why it was named Hesperis which is the Greek word for evening
It's also known as night-scented gilliflower, summer lilac and mother of the evening
It was introduced from Europe in the 1600's
Not long after it escaped from cultivation
It spread quickly because a single plant can produce 20-thousand seeds
It is now categorized as invasive
It's considered a noxious weed in Colorado
And it is banned in Connecticut and Massachusetts
