Artist's Description

Red is a powerful color in Hinduism

It is the divine color of gods who have the power to destroy evil
It is worn on festive occasions like births and marriages
Red represents purity

In Rajasthan it is customary for a married Hindu woman to wear a red veil.
It's done in front of men older than her husband as a sign of respect and modesty

Rajasthan is cloaked in the bland sand colors of the desert
In contrast, the Hindi women there wear vibrant saris
They are bedecked in sparkly jewels and bangles
And the red veils are simply striking
