How fitting that this church topper is under repair.
In 1469 it was put atop Florence's Duomo.
In 1600 lightening struck and knocked it to the ground.
They put another gilt copper ball and cross right back up.
This one was even bigger.
They must have been confident in the precautions they took.
Inside they'd placed relics of saints and two cases of holy medallions.
Outside they'd affixed a lightning rod.
One interesting aside:
Andrea del Verrocchio did the original work
In his workshop there was a young apprentice: Leonardo da Vinci
