Artist's Description

They allow the langur to roam freely in Jodhpur, a city in Rajasthan India.

Hindus believe it is Hanuman, the monkey-god.
He's a hero of legend.
Among his deeds is the rescue of a good god's wife from a demon king.
To do so he had to endure a fire.
They say that's why his face and hands are black.
That's why the believers feed the monkeys fruits and vegetables each day.

A thousand of them live in Jodhpur which is nicknamed the blue city.
That's because many buildings here are painted a vibrant indigo.
They say the upper crust made the color fashionable.
It's was their way of putting themselves above the hoi polloi.
But the pesky masses followed suit.
Blue probably kept their houses cool in the desert sun.

A black and white god in the blue city:
Now that's a colorful history.
